1. Yeah, but when people get desperate they will swim across the channel if they have to. A smuggler with a small boat whould have no problem either, so unless you plan on killing every desperate person that tries it you will suffer from those problems. In a war it will help because then you are willing to kill enemies and have the means and determination to act on it.
2. I would be less certain about this. UK isn't self reliant in food production and if **** hits the fan globally, everyone will cover their own asses first. Things like fertilizers shouldn't be ignored either here.
Quote: According to Farmers Weekly, ôThe gas crisis is having a tremendous impact on the production and price of UK-manufactured ammonium nitrate.ö Because of ballooning gas prices, UK fertiliser prices reached their highest ever in 2005 and have continued rising. February 2006 prices for domestic ammonium nitrate were ú170-175/t, up from ú160/t in October which were already the UKÆs highest ever prices. At begin December 2005 gas prices, N fertiliser prices would significantly exceed ú200/t, double the ú100/t four years ago. By mid-January 2006, the high gas prices had caused ôunprecedented shutdownsö, with all ammonia plants in the UK except one shut down and manufacturers importing ammonia to control costs. Similarly, plants in France, Spain and Bulgaria and 50% of plants in the American Midwest were closed.
So even in best case scenarios there would be a tough fight to determine who gets the last resources that are vital in an effort to adjust to such conditions and UK like many others would be in trouble and certainly lacking heavily in many necessary produce/products.
3. Ok, but we are talking pretty apocalyptic disasters if it comes to the point where normal trading can't meet this need or there is no one to trade with anymore.
I think UK might be a decent place overall, but only some small remote regions might be really good, since individuals would have trouble getting there and large organisations wouldn't bother. I might still prefer to live with my fellow men and work to rebuild things even though it could be pretty hellish, instead of just hiding or trying to save my own ass.
